During this month’s Cartmel races in Cumbria, some of Britain’s brightest BBQ stars will compete for the prize of representing the nation at an international barbecue competition in the United States.
Cartmel is situated in Grange-over-Sands in the heart of the Lake Distract, and Cartmel races always prove popular. The many horse racing fans planning to attend the July Cartmel race meet now have an extra treat to entertain them thanks to the coinciding barbecue competition, which provides for two days of barbecuing fun and will no doubt add an extra sizzle to the occasion.
In previous years, Cartmel racecourse has run its BBQ race day but this is the first time it’s decided to double the barbecue antics – the International BBQ Network is hosting two days of competitions at the races at Cartmel, on Saturday 21 and Monday 23 July.
Toby Shea, director of the International BBQ Network said: “Some of the best Pit teams are taking part in the ‘Frenchs Pit Master series’ to discover which team will head to the Jack Daniels Invitational at Lynchburg, Tennessee in October to represent the UK.
“The Pit Master is the big one and teams will be working through the night on Sunday ready to hand in their dishes to the judges on the Monday. But we shall also be running two fast-paced and fun grilling competitions in which contestants get 45 minutes to create a dish from mystery ingredients on a gas barbecue. All you need do is bring yourself as our sponsors provide everything else.”
Winners of the Pit Masters Series Final will qualify for the Jack Daniels Challenge in the US, and get funding towards the cost of the trip. The competition takes place every October.
As barbecues are loved by the whole family, there will also be fun and games for the younger race goers including their own competitions.
And for those who simply enjoy a good barbecue at the races, there’ll be the chance to compete for a prize for the “best-presented barbecue” during the event. Called Ready Steady Q, contestants will be given a box of mystery ingredients and a limited time in which to create a quick barbecue meal to present to the judges.
The International BBQ Network is committed to promoting all aspects of barbecue in the UK and abroad, and events like this one are run throughout the year.
Winners who go on to compete in the US competition are likely to have cooked American barbecue classics during the two-day event at Cartmel races, like brisket, BBQ chicken, pork shoulder and ribs. In America, a barbecue is called a pit – hence the “Pit Masters” competition name – and is designed for slow-cooking meat for several hours.
It seems the pit-style method of barbecuing is catching on in the UK too, as barbecued ribs were recently revealed as being among the latest food craze to take London by storm, with locals enjoying delicious ribs cooked al fresco and served with various hot and spicy sauces – there are even special rib-focussed events held in the UK nowadays, with Ribstock in April being one such fixture.
